DVD Backup
DVD Backup is intended to let you exercise your "fair use" rights under copyright law to either "time-shift" or "space-shift" DVD content which you may have purchased legitimately. An example of time-shifting would be to temporarily store the data from a DVD you rented so as to watch it at a later time after you have returned the disc (and avoided late fees!). An example of space-shifting would be to copy one or more DVD discs to your laptop hard drive so as to watch them while on a long airplane flight. A final usage of DVDBackup would be to allow you to modify or excerpt sections of DVD video and audio to create your own movies.
With DVD backup, you will be able to save a lot of time on your DVD backup process, as when copying both small sets of files to a single DVD-RW disk or large sets of files to a number of DVDs, you will use the least possible amount of disks to backup your valuable information.
You can backup your files easily, as you just need to add the files to the backup set, insert a DVD, walk through the Task Creation Wizard and press the "Finish" button to start the backup process.
It is also possible to restore your files efficiently, as to restore a file, you just need insert the right disk in the DVD device, find the file in the middle window pane, right-click on it, and hit "Restore".
You can apply a full or a partial DVD backup. A full DVD backup is a backup that contains all the features of the original disc. It can be very easy if the disc is 4.7 billion bytes (4.37GB) or less (single layer DVD or DVD-5), or very complicated if the disc is larger (dual layer DVD or DVD-9) and makes use of advanced features like seamless branching or multiangles. Another option for DVD-9s is to split it over two discs.
A partial backup is a backup containing less material than the original disc. It can be only the main movie, main movie and menus, or the whole disc minus some extras you have no use for. Partial backups can also involve re-encoding some of the features of the disc but only few MPEG encoders can be used to do that.
